But Wait ... There's More
GETTYSBURG, PA -- May 2
One of the disadvantages of doing most of my blogging in mid-day is the delayed reporting of whatever evening hijinks ensue later. So check back a few days to make sure you have the whole story. Because we might have been through with Gettysburg, but Gettysburg wasn't through with us.
Upon leaving the wireless cafe (the gallery photos of the pearl-endowed frog and fancy tin fireplace are of this place), we embarked towards a nice Italian cafe in the downtown district. The one we wanted was closed on Mondays, but two doors down was a good substitute. Despite being the sort of restaurant that has mozzarella sticks on the menu and stocks Campari but has nobody who knows what a Negroni is, the food we did order was pleasantly good -- a seafood casserole special we split, with an appetizer of calamari fried just right.
As with all good Italian restaurant experiences, though, the clock ticked by entirely too fast and I found myself at 8:46 realizing I had 13 minutes and change to get back to my hotel room for 24. Yeah I have it TiVo'd at home, but I trust that about as much as I do the plausability of 99% of this televised chunk of freebase.
8:51:23 -- I had left the cash with Bob to check us out and ride the Sabre back to the room, wondering if he'd still make it back before me. I'm doing my best to gallop haphazardly through downtown Gettysburg with a helmet, armored riding jacket, and laptop-bulked backpack. 8:56:34 -- 5 blocks to go, don't think I'm going to make it. I almost cannonballed a candlelight ghost tour that was setting off from one of the many competing ghost industries in the historic district. 9:02:34 -- I hit the hotel room in a full sweat and missed the previouslies and maybe 30 seconds of the new episode. 9:30:05 -- still no sign of Bob. I keep imagining the sound of the Sabre's basso motor from far away during commercial breaks. 9:55:04 -- just as Paul flatlines on the show, Bob walks in looking like he ran 20 miles to inform me the Sabre battery is fully dead and he walked it the 14 blocks back during the hour. 9:56:03 -- the local Fox news teaser comes on promising details of some 21 year old motorcylist's battle with paralysis after an accident. That last swallow of Yuengling isn't tasting so great now.
The theory is that in the extreme cold (it plummeted to 34 even in Southern PA overnight), the Sabre's battery wires have a bum connection. Needless to say, it isn't the best night of sleep I could hope for. But hey, no moving bike, no accident, right?
To keep the separation of day events into their own posts, please proceed to May 3. And for anyone in suspense, we got it resolved first thing the next morning.
On a brighter note, here are the Galleries from yesterday and today:
